Computers, Mobile phones: Microwave and Middle-Aged Health

Dr.Banchob Junhasavasdikul

Have you noticed that when speaking on mobile phone for a long time, you will sense heat around your face and sometimes feel sharp pain in your ears?

There was a case of my patient, a landscape architecture. Five years ago, she landscaped a large piece of land into a luxurious resort taking her a whole year to make orders through mobile phone. She turned her car into an office for she could use her phone while sitting in the car. Until one day, she woke up with painful feeling around her face starting from her jaws to cheeks and from her temples to chin.

"You have a condition of facial nerves pain," said a professional neurologist. Since then, she kept on taking medicine and was transferred from one doctor to another but her symptom had not totally recovered. In the end, she received acupuncture treatment which could partly help. Until one day she came to tell me "Now I know that my pain resumes whenever I talk on mobile phone. Don't you think that I'm out of my mind for I really feel the pain even when a mobile phone of someone sitting next to me rings.

Since then she'd never used a mobile phone and her condition got much better. I told her to use crystal therapy and recommended her to see MR Akkanee Naowaratana, the top ranked specialist in wave energy therapy in Thailand. "Qigong is another treatment that makes me feel better," said her.

Today, the notion of the world's magnetic power and electromagnetic power, and their effects to human health seems to be a more concrete idea. Some of you may remember ten yeas ago in the States, a woman with a brain tumor sued a mobile phone company in USA by accusing them that her tumor was caused by a mobile phone from this company. The court dismissed the case for the lack of sufficient evidence to support relationship between mobile phones and tumors. Still, this case can lead to further studies and trigger some thoughts that the device we are carrying may not be fully beneficial to us.

It has long been doubtful whether the world's magnetic field, electric field, and other kinds of rays bring about positive or negative effects to our body. Negative magnetic fields can cause Geopathic stress which results in migraine, nausea, insomnia, rheumatoid arthritis symptom and cancer. (Treating Illnesses with Alternative Medicine, Reader's Digest, Thailand, 2001) Chinese also believe in earth energy so they create Feng Shui which provides ways of arranging objects and structures such as houses, furniture, roads, and reservoirs in appropriate location.

According to the science of earth energy, there is a power line on earth called "ley lines." These lines are connected to subterranean running water or other underground mineral energy lines including the world's magnetic lines of force. This is the reason why some land is appropriate for resident constructions while some is not. In the old days Europeans search for underground water resources by placing a trident on one's palm and concentrate his/her mind. Then, the trident will respond to the mind when it finds an underground water resource.

Nowadays, modern city constructions use lots of iron structures plus railways either on ground or underground. There are also lots of electric wires hanging here and there also electronic wares such as microwave ovens, and hair dryers that are in almost every house. In addition, many people spend several hours in front of computers plus having unlimited hours of mobile phone conversations. This is the reason why the ley lines are being affected causing people in big cities to have Geopathic stress and illnesses.

Geopathic stress can cause depression, hypertension, and immune system weakening. Some may suddenly lose energy though working for only half a day. This short of energy symptom is called chronic fatigue syndrome. In some cases, a person may feel dizzy for no reasons while others may feel tense and pain along their necks and temples whenever working in front of computer.

Some of you may notice that staying with nature for some days make you feel better.

Recently, two pieces of research paper study the connection between microwave and illnesses. The first piece of the research paper was conducted by Franz Adkofer in the European Union. According to the study, mobile phone radio waves cause changes in cells and damage DNA, a genetic code. The wave being used in this study is the wave with a wavelength in the range of 0.3-2 watt/kg. (Specific Absorption Rate-SAR) which is equal to 0.5-1 watt/kg of mobile phone radio wave. Mr. Adkofer said "This is only a laboratory experiment which requires further studies. We do not intend to cause panic but knowing about this beforehand is safer."

This year around 650 million mobile phones are being sold worldwide and the number of mobile phone users increase to 1.5 billion around the world.

The second research was conducted by Prof. DR.. Surapol Issarakraisorn, from the Division of Hematology study, Department of Medine, Siriraj Hospital. The research was conducted using a case control study to investigate factors that can cause leukemia. There are two groups of participants in this case control study. The first group consists of 185 leukemia patients and the second group is a controlled group with 766 patients of other illnesses being admitted to the hospital. The results are:

Factors
Number of leukemia patients (%)
Controlled group (%)
Use mobile phone
35 (19%)
110 (14%)
Contact with household electromagnetic appliances.
69 (37%)
232 (30%)
Live near high voltage electrical wiring
12 (6%)
37 (5%)
Use or contact with benzine while working
9 (5%)
11 (1%)
Use or contact with other chemical substances
16 (9%)
38 (5%)
Use or contact with pesticide while working
36 (19%)
67 (9%)
Contact with domestic pesticide
63 (34%)
237 (31%)
Have relative(s) with a history of cancer
32 (17%)
113 (15%)

In conclusion, the study finds out that there is no connection between leukemia and participants whose family member(s) has a history of cancer. In addition, there is no valid connection between mobile phone usage and leukemia. The result in this study contradicts to the first study which finds out that leukemia is linked to people using mobile phones for more than three years.

Living near high voltage electrical wiring, and contact with household electromagnetic appliances such as hair dryers, computers, and microwave ovens are highly related to leukemia type AML.

Using or contacting with pesticide at work or at home is also highly related to leukemia.

There are many methods to avoid electromagnetic wave, for example, using mobile phone only if necessary, using hands free, using normal telephones whenever having chances, placing crystals in offices and hanging specific crystal individually. Besides these methods, I still have a high- technology one. Last month, my friend brought back from America, a pendant created by a group of Alternative Medicine therapists. This pendant has electronic circuit called "Sympathetic resonance technology." It is said to protect our body from electromagnetic wave. He told me that when people talk on mobile phone, they usually feel week in their arms but this pendant can protect our arm strength from being lost. This is quite strange, isn't it? I criticized him that his method of proving the effectiveness of the pendant is not valid for there are no concrete fact and figures. He then told me that there is a device to measure magnetic wave. So, I told him to see MR Akkanee Naowarat, a specialist in this field. After that MR Akkanee admittedly said "this pendant can provide protection in some extent."
