Backache Relief
Backache is commonly
found in people of various ages, starting from elderly people to
middle age persons including those driving long-distances and laborers
who regularly take anodyne to relieve pain. Backache can also occur
in white-collars because they have to be seated in limited spaces
for many hours.
It is possible that
men have encountered backache since primitive time when our ancestors
(anthropoid ape) evolved from walking with four legs to two legs.
This new posture changes the position of our back from horizontal
to vertical causing our back to receive more weight than four-legged
animals. Weights of head and things we carry will pressure on the
backbone making the muscles around our bones to work harder.
Bending forwards and
backwards causes the squash of vertebrae especially when lifting
heavy stuff. In case we bend down to lift up a heavy box, our back
muscles, starting from our neck to basin bone, will be strained.
Strained muscles around these areas will compress the vertebrae
to move in a way that they crush each other causing the area around
the bones and muscles to swollen. And this is how we have backache.
Back pain usually results
from the inflammatory of syndesmosis and backbone periostitis which
are caused by the following factors:
1. Faulty body posture
The main cause of backache
is related to the way we move our body in daily activities. Bend
down to lift up heavy things or turn aside to do something or sit
on a chair without adjusting your back to the form of the chair
back can all cause faulty backbone posture. Doing the above things
cause our back to excessively bend forward or backward. If the spine
and muscles are in wrong posture all day long, cartilage and intervertebral
disc will be inflamed. Lifting heavy objects will worsen the inflammation
and in severe cases the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the nearby
area will also be inflamed.
Sleeping is another
reason for back pain since sleeping on mattresses that are too soft
causes the spine and muscles to bend in faulty position for a long
time.
2. Carrying too heavy
objects
Some objects need to
be carried by two people. However, if anybody carries these objects
alone, he/she may later find out that he/she has back pain. Carry
too heavy objects cause the vertebrae to severely squeeze each other
causing the intervertebral disc to be inflamed. In some worst cases,
the intervertebral disc may move aside and press down on the nerves.
Besides that muscles and ligaments around this area may be torn
and the person may have stiff back.
3. Unsynchronized
back muscles movements
Sometimes a person may
quickly move their body unintentionally. In this case the back muscles
are moved, even though, some parts of the muscles are not in the
right position such as sitting for a long time and suddenly turning
aside to reach for something. In this situation, some parts of the
muscles will be immediately and severely compressed to suit the
changing posture which can lead to muscles laceration or inflammation.
4. Abnormal spine
posture
Backache also occurs
in people who have bending spine since when they were born or when
they were kids. For pregnant women, they usually have back pain
because they have to carry weights of the babies which can lead
to faulty spine posture as well.
5. Pressuring on
the nerves
Pressure on the nerves
occurs when the intervertebral disc bulges out to the side and presses
on the nerves located aside of the spine. This condition happens
when we carry too heavy objects and the pain sometimes travels down
to one leg. When ones bend down, turn, cough, and sneeze, the pain
will also increase. If any of you are facing this symptom, you should
consult doctors immediately. Do not wait until the condition is
worsen.
How to prevent backache
by yourself
1. Take a rest and avoid
activities requiring heavy objects carrying or bending up and down.
2. Adjust your daily
postures into correct postures
3. Exercise to strengthen
muscles
4. Take two tablets
of paracetamol or aspirin to relieve pain and drink a lot of water
Exercise back muscles
Posture1
Lie face up on a hard
floor and use both hands to pull both knees to your chest slowly.
Stay in that position for three seconds, then stretching your legs
and repeat the same procedure. This posture helps reducing muscle
tension.
Posture2.
Lie face up with one
leg stretches out and another fold. Use your hands to pull up the
folded leg close to your chest as much as possible. Then, count
1-3 and stretch it out. Do the same way with another leg. This posture
helps reduce tension in the lower part of the back muscles.
Posture3.
Lie face up and bend
your knees at a 90 degree angles, then, contract your abdominal
muscles to lift your upper body up. This posture exercises abdominal
muscles. If muscles around this area are strong, back muscles will
be in good position as well.
Posture4.
Lie face down by putting
a pillow under your stomach. Contract your back muscles to the back
and lift up your head and feet into equal level. Count 1-3 then
bring back your head and feet into the beginning position and do
it again. This posture helps strengthening back muscles.
You should go see
the doctor if having the following symptoms:
1. Still feel the pain
after taking anti-pain medicine and having some rest or cannot stop
taking the pills.
2.Have backache and
also pain travels down to one of the legs.
3. Have leg fatigue
or numbness due to the fact that the nerves are being compressed.
Warning
Do not let masseur pulls
up your shoulders while you lie face down or let him /her stamp
on your back while bending your legs to be close to your back. These
massage positions cause the vertebrae to severely squeeze each other
and the intervertebral disc will be inflamed and press down on the
nerves.
