Eye Strain

By Dr.Tipatat Junhasavasdikul

The pain occurred around the eyeballs after having used the eyes for too long is the result of the 6 fatigued muscles of each eye.

These eyes muscles are small muscles responsible for the rolling of the eyes. This may not sound like much of a work. However, they are also a type of muscles which can often be worn out when they work too hard. For some people, the pain further goes to both temples. If this sort of pain gets more severe, it can be a cause of a headache.

If you focus on the computer screen or the television for a long time, you sometimes feel hot around the eyes. That is because the eyes are affected by the rays from the screen and can turn out to be hurtful.

You can easily solve this problem. First, you should turn on the light while using the computer for when we are in the dark, the iris is wider. So the light from the monitor can directly harm the eyes more, comparing to when there is enough light.

However, if the eyes are still sore, even when the light is on, it is time to take a break. You can do some other activities or look at some other sights. To look out can relax the tense eye muscles and closing the eyes for a while is also advisable.

If you have an eye strain, place a warm cloth on the eyes for about 3 minutes then with the cool cloth for about 2 minutes. Repeat this 3 times and you will feel much better.

Apart from the method suggested above, massaging the eyes can also decrease the pain. This is the Chinese technique which is said not only to cure the weariness but to protect the eyes also;

1. Hold both fists and press the thumbs hard on the temples, but not too hard that you feel hurtful. Count from 1-10 and massage gently before releasing the weight of the thumbs. Repeat this step 3 times.

2. Hold the same position of the thumbs but this time place the index fingers on the middle of the eyebrows. Massage them from the beginning to the end of the eyebrows. Follow this 3 times.

3. Hang on to the same position of no. 2 but place the index fingers a little lower in the same level of the bridge of the nose. Massage the eyes from the beginning to the lower part of the eyes. Move further to end of the eyebrows. Do this 3 times.

4. For those who also have a headache around the forehead, massage such area also. The movements of the fingers are the same of no. 2 and 3 but this time place the index fingers on the middle of the forehead. Start to massage by spreading both fingers out to the temples then move gradually to the hair rim.

5. Place the index and middle fingers on the cheek bones parallel to the bridge of the nose for measurement. The index fingers are in the same place as the nerves under the lower part of the eyes. Massage gently and count 1-10. Practice this 3 times.

However, those who easily get eye strain should have their eyes checked to see whether it is due to the eyesight or not. That is because to be short-sighted or long-sighted is also a cause of eye sore. Ones who have long worn glasses should recheck their eyes as well since the eyesight often changes once you get older. There might be a change of a new pair of glasses.

Furthermore, there are those whose eye muscles do not work accordingly because of the inborn abnormal entanglement of the eye muscles causing them to have to work harder while trying to roll the eyes. Of course, the eyes will easily become fatigued. In such case, it is advisable to consult an optimist for further treatments.
