A Lion - Hearted Man Who
Conquer Cancer
By the editor
Most cancer patients
usually feel shock when they firstly know about their illness. Yet,
there are some cancer patients who can admit to their health condition
and bravely fight it. Those patients are even braver than their
relatives who are so worried as if they are the ones with cancer.
Like Mr. Worachart
Uchupaiboonwong, a patient of lymphatic tissue cancer (Malignant
Lymphoma), who found out that he had cancer since 1997 or 7 years
ago.
If you have a chance
to meet Mr. Worachat, you won't believe that he used to be severely
ill because now he has smiley face with bright, and healthy skin.
So, what did he do to fight this deathly disease? This article will
reveal his secret to you.
"Around 1997, before
I found out that I had cancer, I worked real hard for seven days
a week. At that time, I was under stress because it was during the
economic crisis. My tension had mounted through time until one day
I suddenly felt pain in my head and had a fever. I could eat nothing
and started vomiting. I went to see three doctors before they admitted
me to the hospital after finding out that I had lymphatic tissue
cancer. At first, the doctor only told my wife that I had cancer.
My wife was afraid that I wouldn't be able to accept the truth,
which she was right at first. So, she decided to tell me I only
had Lymphadenitis. She told me that the treatment of this illness
was like that of cancer. I let my wife handle everything for I was
so ill that I was almost unconscious.
… I found out the truth
almost a month after that. It was when my foreign friend came to
see me after I had the third chemo treatment. He was curious of
my real illness, so, he asked my wife right in front of me. When
I heard the answer, I let out a cry with no shame. I really couldn't
bear the truth because seven years ago, most cancer patients had
a very few chance of surviving. I lost 19 kilos within a few months.
I used to weight 78 kilos but it went down to 59 kilos at the time.
I was so thin that my ex-colleague didn't recognize me though we
were only one meter away from each other. When I greeted him, he
puzzlingly looked at me for a moment.
After that, my wife
and I started finding out more about cancer. It took three months
before my wife found a book about natural treatment for cancer written
by Dr. Banchob and Dr. Lalita. I was interested in this type of
treatment, so, I decided to take courses at Balavi. I learned different
ways of fighting cancer such as meditation, subconscious training,
hydro aerobics and exercise. I also learned about food for cancer
treatment and gaining knowledge on useful daily diet. I practiced
what I have learned at home and received chemotherapy at the same
time. I've got one shot per three weeks and took medicine for half
a year. In the end, I had eight big chemo shots and nine small shots
altogether.
…When I first started
exercising, I had to use lots and lots of my will power because
I was so weak that I almost had no energy to stand and walk. It
was even worst when I just had chemo shots. While I was at the hospital,
I would try to exercise my legs and my face little by little. I
kept telling myself that I wouldn't die as long as I try to fight.
I kept on aiming high and tried to reach my goal step by step.
…At the beginning, I
exercised lightly. Everything should be done one step after another.
For example, when I meditated, I would pray to be able to walk first.
Then, I could walk. After that I would pray to be able to run, then,
I could run. There was a time when I tried to skip the step by overly
exercised after I just had a chemo shot. The effect was bad for
I was unable to breath and I was alone at the time because my wife
and my kids just went out to join Loy Krathong festival. I was lucky
enough to be able to make a call to my wife, though, I only wanted
her to come and hear my last word. (Laughing) Since then, I have
never overly exercised but do it step by step with consistency.
I've taken a course at Balavi for a month and feel much stronger.
I'm lucky that everyone in my family always stays beside me and
gives me lots of emotional support. Nowadays, I have to exercise
everyday. My house is near Chao Phraya River, so, I'll go exercise
by the river every morning. When I have free time, I will go to
Balavi to have a meal, exercise, use fitness facilities, sauna,
and solar bath."
Before knowing that
he had cancer, Mr. Worachart's favorite dishes were steamed capon
in flavored rice and rice with stewed pig legs for breakfast, rice
with various types of Thai dishes for lunch and "unvegetarian" food,
food with lots of meat, fat, and carbohydrate, for dinner. Besides
he also smoked more than one bag of cigarette a day and drank 3-4
cups of coffee daily. How can his body resist to all these free
radicals?
But after he came to
Balavi, his menu has totally been changed from hi-protein to nutritious
menu designed especially for fighting cancer.
During the first year,
he could only eat brown rice and vegetables without protein, tofu,
and oil. For the second year, he could have tofu but still had to
eat brown rice and vegetables as his main dishes. It was until the
third and forth year when he could have fish. Mr. Worachart says
he is now used to this type of diet. It doesn't matter to him if
he doesn't have fish and tofu because he can only have brown rice
and fruits and vegetables, his unmissable miracle food.
"For five consecutive
years that I' d always had my meals at Balavi in order to make sure
that I'd eaten the right food as the doctor told me to. Even now,
whenever I have time, I'll come to eat at Balavi. People here are
like my relatives and they make me feel as if I'm part of the family.
… When I'm at home,
I'll cook simple food. Sometimes I'll only have vegetables like
salad. I'll put streamed or boiled potatoes and sweet corns in my
salad. It tastes good even without salad dressing. Sometimes I'll
have Suki yaki or when the weather is cold, I'll make sour tamarind
soup and vegetable soup. They smell so good that my neighbor can't
help coming to see what I am cooking.
… I'll eat lots and
lots of fruits and vegetables everyday. I can eat 4-5 small papayas
daily plus I'll have brown rice and whole-wheat bread. I try to
eat according to what the doctor told me to. That is eating two
portions of vegetables, two portions of fruits and one portion of
fruit or vegetable juice. The rest can be brown rice, whole-wheat
bread and tofu to get enough nutrition especially beta carotene
and vitamin C. These nutrients will help me fight free radicals
that I daily receive. I eat so many fruits and vegetables that my
new hair growing instead of white ones falling after chemo shots
becomes shiny black. I don't have to waste my money dyeing my hair
anymore. My wife even teased me for my new look that she felt as
if having a new and younger husband. "
Today, Mr. Worachart,
being full of spirit and energy, has been running a private company
for three years after resigning from a foreign company. He told
us that it was fortunate that he resigned from the old company for
he could spend all of the time taking care of his health.
For this coming New
Year, we'd like those who are severely ill to have a lion-heart
like Mr. Worachart, a man who can conquer cancer.
